Pickwick Tea was originally known under the brand name of Douwe Egberts, which as you may know, has a fine tradition of roasting and blending coffees. The Douwe Egberts family opened a small shop in Holland in 1753 selling coffee, tea and tobacco.
While under the Douwe Egberts brand, the tea packaging displayed a drawing of an English mail coach. It became so popular and recognizable that the Douwe Egberts company decided to find an English brand name for their tea. The wife of a director at Douwe Egberts, who loved books by the British writer Charles Dickens, suggested the name Pickwick, inspired by the Dickens' novel Pickwick Papers.
Since 1937, Douwe Egberts has sold their tea under this brand name.
